October 28, 2026

The 2026 econext Conference brought together industry leaders, innovators, businesses, and community partners to explore the opportunities shaping Newfoundland and Labrador’s green economy. Under the theme Building Our Green Economy: Innovation, Opportunities, and Impact, the event showcased emerging projects, industry developments, and partnerships that are creating new opportunities for sustainable economic growth across the province.

“There’s strength when we come together to advocate for change, and we have more common ground than we think,” said Laura Barron, CEO of econext, during the conference’s closing discussion.

This year’s conference explored a wide range of topics, including major projects, clean technology innovation, community-led sustainability initiatives, infrastructure development, and the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s industries.

Don Mills, Chair of the Atlantic Economic Panel, opened the day’s discussions with insights from the report, Bolder Ambitions: Greater Prosperity for All..  The conversation highlighted the importance of addressing workforce shortages, reducing barriers to trade and investment, and strengthening regional collaboration to unlock Atlantic Canada’s economic potential.

Major projects and emerging investment opportunities were also a key focus throughout the day. Industry representatives shared updates on developments across the province, including North Atlantic’s Green Energy Hub, Corner Brook Pulp & Paper’s Project Tuckamore, and opportunities in renewable energy generation and storage. Speakers emphasized the importance of preparing the workforce, strengthening local supply chains, and developing the infrastructure needed to turn these opportunities into reality.

As the day came to a close, leaders from Newfoundland and Labrador’s energy, technology, ocean, and other industry sectors reflected on the opportunities and challenges ahead. Discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration across sectors, workforce development, and policies that support innovation and investment.

Barron highlighted the value of bringing different industries and organizations together to advocate for shared priorities and advance Newfoundland and Labrador’s green economy.

The conversations throughout the day reinforced a common message: Newfoundland and Labrador has significant opportunities ahead, and realizing their full potential will require continued collaboration, innovation, and action.
