Background

Canada’s ocean sector has incredible capacity and strengths located from coast-to coast-to-coast. Recognizing the nation’s vast array of ocean-based industries, and their perceived boundless potential for collaboration and partnership, an Ocean Asset Map (OAM) was designed, constructed, and launched in 2019. The purpose of the OAM was to generate enhanced awareness of Canada’s increasingly innovative, dynamic, and inclusive ocean ecosystem, and to facilitate collaboration and partnerships across ocean industry verticals. Through this effort, the OAM aimed to further develop and expand Canadian-based ocean enterprises, both nationally and internationally.A unique digital tool, the Ocean Asset Map 1.0, was sponsored by OceansAdvance (OA), the Ocean Technology Alliance Canada (OTAC) and the Atlantic Canadian Opportunities Agency (ACOA); with development input provided by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster. The tool was delivered by the collective’s team leads in collaboration with Triware, a St. John’s based technology service provider.

By combining collected data, and integrating a unique Ecosystem Search function, the team developed an online map that visually showcases ocean assets across the country and provides high-level details on each ocean entity. In so doing, the tool showcases the capabilities and competitive strengths of Canada’s ocean sector and helps facilitate more local, national, and international collaboration and partnership. Currently, the interactive pan-Canadian directory has 1,977 listings and several hundred visitors per week.

The first iteration of the map has done a solid job capturing such information, but there is an opportunity to go deeper and improve what is currently available. The challenge being addressed remains the same: What Ocean Assets exist in Canada and where do we find them?

OceansAdvance, on behalf of the OTAC Team, seeks to build upon the objectives and the momentum of the initial project. To do so, we are seeking dynamic and driven individuals to join the team dedicated to the Ocean Asset Map 2.0 project.
