ST. JOHN’S (NL) – The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) is expressing its support for the Federal government’s contribution of $320 million to help Canada’s offshore oil and gas industry.

“Minister O’Regan talked quite a bit today about the potential for Canada’s offshore oil and gas industry as it relates to the low-carbon economy of the future,” said Kieran Hanley, NEIA’s Executive Director. “We couldn’t agree more; it has long been our position that Newfoundland and Labrador can be a global leader in the energy transition.”

Hanley said that the offshore oil and gas industry is the centrepiece of the province’s clean growth strategy. “The success of this industry provides the basis from which we can strategically diversify our economy.” A commitment to being one of the most environmentally sustainable oil and gas jurisdictions in the world, said Hanley, opens the door to new cleantech investment, innovation, and opportunity for the province.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is in a much stronger position to develop new clean technologies, pursue new renewable energy projects, and enter into the emerging hydrogen economy with a thriving offshore oil and gas industry,” said Hanley, “and so we welcome the support that the Federal government has come to the table with today.”

Hanley says that NEIA has worked tirelessly with industry partners this year to help envision what clean growth looks like within the province’s offshore oil and gas sector. “We look forward to continuing this work, and having the opportunity to provide our perspective on how this investment can be deployed to future-proof the industry… and enable long-term success by turning the province into a hub of clean growth innovation.”

NEIA is a not-for-profit association of businesses that promotes the development of clean technology and the growth of the green economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. NEIA has over 200 members. More information can be found at https://neia.org.
