Background
The Minister of Industry, Energy, and Technology has indicated that the provincial government will be moving forward with the development of a renewable energy plan:
“Our province has an abundance of developed and undeveloped renewable energy resources, as well as experience and expertise in our technology and energy sectors. Newfoundland and Labrador is well positioned to advance our status as a Clean Energy Centre of Excellence, leading in the global energy transition. In order to leverage this opportunity, create employment opportunities for our residents, and ensure that our Province’s clean energy resources are developed in a responsible, sustainable fashion, we need a plan guided by industry expertise and the unique perspective of stakeholders.”
A virtual consultation process will take place between October 15 to November 4, 2021. More information on this upcoming engagement can be found here.
econext is hosting its annual conference on October 22 at The Sheraton in St. John’s, NL on Friday, October 22.
“The econext conference is the best opportunity for businesses, governments, and academia to get together to network and explore clean growth opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Kieran Hanley, econext‘s Executive Director.

Technology, Net Zero, and the Environment
Global discussions around net zero have accelerated greatly since the onset of the pandemic. The pursuit of net zero will present industries key to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy with significant challenges, but also with substantial opportunities for the development and application of new technologies. In this session you will hear from leaders in oceans, mining, and oil and gas on what all of this means for their industries and the action that they are seeing taking place.
Hon. Bernard Davis, Minister – Environment and Climate Change
Jim Keating, CEO – Oil & Gas Corporation of NL
Kendra MacDonald, CEO – Canada’s Ocean Supercluster
Allan Cramm, VP Innovation – Novamera Inc.
Geni Peters, Labour Market Information Manager – ECO Canada
Value from Waste and the Opportunity for Innovation
Newfoundland and Labrador faces obstacles in dealing effectively with its waste streams – at household and industry scales. Our population is small and waste is generated in rural and remote areas. Economies of scale are difficult to achieve, and the environmental impact of transporting waste outside of the province can be substantial. In this session you will hear about why conditions for waste management innovation are ripe in this province, and where the best opportunities for investigation may be.
Moderator – Sarah Halliday, Bus. Dev. Manager – Heave Away Waste Management
Charles Bown, CEO – Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB)
Don Drew, Operation Manager – Newco Metal & Auto Recycling
Ben Wiper, Co-Founder and CEO – 3F Waste Recovery
Our Energy Future – Electricity, Renewables, and Hydrogen
The momentum that hydrogen and other clean fuels are gaining globally as solutions to achieve deep emissions reductions present Newfoundland and Labrador with exciting opportunities for the development of its vast cache of renewable energy resources. Using clean energy for the production of clean fuels gives the province a new pathway for development, while electricity generation remains an option. In this session you will hear about what these opportunities are and what the most realistic pathways to clean energy development may be for the province.
Moderator – Alex Templeton, Partner – McInnes Cooper
Hon. Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Natural Resources
Hon. Andrew Parsons, Minister of Industry, Energy, and Technology
Jennifer Williams, President and CEO – Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
Keith Drover, VP Project Development – Growler Energy

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Public Procurement Agency is seeking input from the public and local businesses to help develop an Environmental Procurement Policy that will help guide the provincial government’s purchases of goods and services with a reduced environmental impact.
“We are encouraging our members to provide the provincial government with their perspectives on procurement,” says Kieran Hanley, econext‘s Executive Director. “The provincial government is one of the biggest consumers of products and services in Newfoundland and Labrador – and the criteria it puts in place to make purchasing choices can have a substantial impact.”
econext members can participate in the public engagement through Engagenl.ca until Friday, October 8. Written submissions are being accepted until Friday, November 5 by email to markdrover@gov.nl.ca.
“When you are allowed to consider environmental performance as a factor in procurement, you can make better decisions for the environment and – we like to think – the economy as well,” says Hanley. “The cheapest options isn’t always the best option, and it’s good to see that government is open to a more holistic and long-term approach to decision-making around purchases.”
Hanley says that econext will also be submitting a response of its own directly to government, and will be engaging its membership on a one-on-one basis to inform its recommendations.

On September 16, 2021 econext hosted a panel discussion exploring the concept of the ‘green job’ and what it means in the Newfoundland and Labrador context.
“The energy transition and the greening of the economy will look different depending on where in the world you are,” said Kieran Hanley, econext‘s Executive Director. “The makeup of an economy – from its primary industries and its future growth potential – have a real impact on what green jobs will be created and available.”
“econext was excited to start a discussion about what this could mean for Newfoundland and Labrador, and we were thrilled to gain a diverse range of perspectives from a great group of panelists,” said Hanley.
The panel discussion was broad and included topics like the importance of technical and digital skills, the greening of the economy, buying local, and the export of our expertise. The event was recorded and is available for free viewing on econext On-Demand.
“econext and its members believe that there are significant opportunities for economic growth and diversification within this province related to clean growth,” said Hanley. “Understanding how that relates to the workforce will be an important factor in helping us reach our potential, and with the help of our panelists econext has now taken the first steps.”

Purchase Carbon Offsets Created in Newfoundland & Labrador
Sharp Management is the first firm to offer NL generated Certified Carbon Offsets for purchase.
Sharp, through the design and implementation of engineered wetlands to treat sewage wastewater in the towns of Stephenville and Appleton-Glenwood, has quantified, verified, and acquired certification of 55,000 Carbon Offsets from these projects.
The revenue generated from the sale of these offsets will be split 50% with the municipalities who invested in this environmentally sustainable technology and 50% to help fund future wetland projects for other municipalities.
Carbon Offsets are generated by the reduction or elimination of carbon emissions that would normally be produced. Another way of describing it is, when a standard system by a new innovative method is utilized, that does the same thing or better, does it with Zero or reduced CO2 emissions. Carbon Offsets can be generated on the amount reduced.
