Recommendations for Reforming Environmental Assessment, Permitting, and Guidance Documents in Newfoundland and Labrador.

NEIA’s recommendations come from direct engagement with its membership, partners, and other green economy stakeholders. This document will focus on recommending activities the government can undertake to: reduce GHGs; address concerns with electricity generation; increase resiliency in a changing climate; empower Newfoundland and Labradorians to contribute; and provide the leadership necessary to drive change.
Regarding the proposed new Public Tendering Act from the Government Procurement Reform initiative, the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) reiterates what it views as important considerations for the new act take in to account from the perspective of its members.

A series of recommended additions and changes based on engagement with NEIA membership.
Over the course of five months, NEIA engaged its members, industry associations, interest groups, and environmental professionals on what they saw as obstacles to and opportunities for the growth of our province’s green economy. The responses we received were as wide-ranging as the sector itself, but the priorities which emerged can be divided in to four distinct areas: recommendations which support (1) the growth of the provincial green economy at large; (2) environmental sector business operations; (3) firm-level growth; and (4) specific environmental / economic issues.
NEIA commends the City of St. John’s for striking an appropriate balance between development and environment in its draft municipal plan – and for recognizing the environment as a critical development asset. NEIA believes there are additional areas of opportunity which the City should consider for inclusion in its final document.
