CEO Message – January 29, 2025

In the face of extreme tariffs, we need to consider alternatives to the US products and services that we are purchasing.

There are many developments and opportunities to be excited about in 2025, but with the seeming probability of the Americans applying a 25% tariff to its Canadian imports in the days ahead – it is not lost on us that many of econext‘s members are going to be directly and potentially severely impacted. Indeed, many of Newfoundland and Labrador’s industries will be challenged – along with the entirety of Canada’s economy.

Businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador are going to need our help. And while we are confident that our Provincial and Federal governments will do everything in their power to help businesses and their workers through this turbulence, there are decisions that we all make on a daily basis that can be helpful too.

We should be doing our best to buy as local as we possibly can.

Are there products and services that you are sourcing from the United States that can be displaced by Newfoundland and Labrador alternatives? If you cannot source what you need within the province, can you get them from somewhere else in Canada? And if not Canada, what about from nations more friendly to Canada?

These are questions that every business can ask itself and act upon. The bottom line is that Canadians need to strongly reconsider spending money on products and services from a country that seems intent on causing harm to our own. The irony is not lost on me that this message will be spread on social media platforms owned by those who are indifferent or highly supportive of the punitive trade action being pursued. This is a problem.

And so it is incumbent on all of us think through what we have the means to do in our own work. This week econext will be reviewing the products and services that it procures to see where it can shift. If many Canadian organizations, corporations, and individuals do the same – we can mitigate some of the damage that is to come and also strengthen our domestic economy long-term.

A call to action: take some time this week to think about where you are buying from. The added benefit of buying more local? You will reduce the environmental footprint of your business.

econext ideathon | March 7-9, 2025 | Grenfell Campus – Corner Brook

econext Clean Growth Ideathon

Embrace the Future of Clean Growth! econext is thrilled to announce it’s fifth ideathon, paving the way for innovative solutions that will drive sustainable progress in Newfoundland and Labrador. This time, we are bringing the ideathon back to Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook! The in-person weekend-long event, open to all MUN and CNA students, will be taking place in-person March 7-9, 2025.

What is an ideathon?

Ideathons are competitive events in which students work together in teams over a short timeframe to come up with solutions to a set challenge. Our ideathons are a space to develop innovative solutions for clean growth in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The specific challenge, relating to clean growth, will be released at the beginning of the weekend where we will provide you with all the necessary information needed to participate.

Teams will consist of 3-5 students.

What is Clean Growth?

Clean growth refers to economic growth that is achieved in an environmentally sustainable way. It involves developing and adopting innovative technologies, practices, and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize waste, and preserve natural resources while fostering economic prosperity.

Sustainability is the concept of meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It emphasizes the balance between environmental health, economic development, and social well-being.

By embracing clean growth, Newfoundland and Labrador can build a sustainable, diversified economy that preserves its natural beauty and resources for future generations.

Who can participate?

This is a multi-disciplinary event and we welcome any student from Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic to participate. If you are interested in clean growth, we encourage you to join us! Please note that this event takes place at Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook, and transportation and accommodations will NOT be provided.

When and where?

The ideathon will take place in-person at the Arts and Science Atrium at Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook over a 48-hour period from March 7-9, 2025. The event will be starting at 5:00pm on Friday March 7 and wrapping up by 6:00pm on Sunday March 9. Exact schedule to be provided at a later time.

We encourage students to stay on campus while working to take part in workshops and to benefit from mentors.

Why should you participate?

  • We will be awarding cash prizes to the top three teams: $3,000 for 1st Place, $2,000 for 2nd Place, and $1,000 for 3rd Place! PLUS more non-tangible prizes.

How to register?

Registration is individual, but you will be required to work on teams of 3-5 studentsSubmission of teams will take place on the evening of Friday March 7. If you have already established a team, you will be required to submit your teams then. If you haven’t already established a team, there will be opportunity throughout the evening to network to form teams. We will assist in matching individuals to teams as needed.

RFP – Centralized Information Hub: Green Economy

Background
Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is expecting significant growth in its green economy (i.e., clean energy, energy efficiency retrofits, critical minerals, circular economy, etc.). Findings from various research initiatives undertaken have pointed to a need to educate and create greater awareness within NL about the opportunities before it. The need for education and awareness has been identified as a key action in the attraction and retention of the workforce required to support and realize green economy opportunities in the province.

Objective
The objective of this scope of work is to create a centralized hub (i.e., website) where important information about NL’s green economy can reside and be accessed by NLers who are interested to learn more about emerging areas of development and consider careers within them.

The timeline for this project is very short, can you elaborate on the need to have the project completed in such a short timeframe?
We are motivated to complete the project within the outlined timeframe.

The RFP mentions meeting bi-weekly however is there an option to meet sooner/more if necessary considering the timeline.
Yes.

How much time would econext require to make decisions (ie: approve items, submit edits, etc.)? Are they able to do this in real time during meetings to ensure the timeline is met?
In most cases – yes. We will take responsibility for slippage in timeframes should our inability to do so be the cause.

Are there any future plans for the website (ie: added functionality, new sections) that should be taken into consideration when doing the initial build?
None that we can think of at this time.

What is the internal approval process?
A project manager will be assigned to the project who will have decision-making authority.

Are there any accessibility considerations that must be prioritized (e.g., colour contrast, readability for different audiences)?
We would leave it to the selected proponent to provide us with their expert advice on this matter.

Is there a budget allocated for this project?
We are asking interested vendors to propose a price based on the scope of work outlined.

While econext has a library of available imagery, we would expect the successful proponent to source and/or develop imagery if necessary.

Does econext have a preferred hosting platform for the website or should we include a recommendation in the quote?
econext will provide the hosting platform (Bluehost).

Should the purchase of the domain be included as part of the quote or will econext be purchasing this separately?
econext can pay for the domain.

There is mention of a “green job bank” being included, do you envision this being built directly into the site or incorporating the one on the econext site (https://econext.ca/jobs/)
We would expect this to be built directly into the site.

For the event calendar, will users need to be able to purchase tickets and/or rsvp to events? Or do you envision it being more of a list of upcoming events and their details.
This would be a list of upcoming events, with tickets/RSVPs etc. being handled by third party platforms.

Are there any websites (do not need to be associated with NL or econext) that are similar to use as examples?
We do not have a specific website that we would point to, no.
