econext insights: Marine Transportation Decarbonization – Technology and Training Priorities

Join us as we present recently released data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions sources in Newfoundland and Labrador’s marine transportation sector. We will outline best available data relating to:

  • Tankers
  • Supply ships
  • Cruise ships
  • Fishing vessels
  • Ferries
  • and more!

Marine transportation is responsible for ~11% of Newfoundland and Labrador’s total GHGs. The achievement of net zero by the year 2050 depends on our ability to develop and implement new decarbonization solutions – from the use of low-carbon or clean fuels to the implementation of battery/electric technologies.

Access to this new data will allow us to better understand where our province’s efforts are best placed as we prioritize the research, development, and adoption of new technologies – and develop training and professional development programs in support.

econext insights: Opportunities for Domestic Clean Fuels Use in Newfoundland and Labrador

As jurisdictions around the world work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build more resilient energy systems, clean fuels are emerging as a key part of the solution. With abundant natural resources and a growing focus on innovation, Newfoundland and Labrador is well-positioned to lead in this transition. Join econext for an online workshop as we explore the opportunities and challenges of clean fuel adoption across some of the province’s most critical economic sectors.

This session builds on the findings of econext’s recent research, which took a sector-specific approach to assessing the potential for clean fuel use within Newfoundland and Labrador. The research focused on the following areas:
• Marine Transportation
• Port Operations
• Electricity Grid Integration
• Remote Communities
• Heavy Industry (e.g. Mining)
• Heavy Duty Transportation
• Public Transportation
• Aviation

Session participants will be provided with a high-level overview of the study’s findings and invited to offer feedback that helps validate and enhance the insights. Your input will help shape future work, ensuring it reflects real-world needs and supports informed decision-making.

If you’re a stakeholder in any of these areas—whether you work in operations, infrastructure, energy, or policy—your perspective is vital. This is a chance to connect with peers, share your expertise, and contribute to shaping a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Newfoundland and Labrador. Cleantech Innovation Webinar: Iceland and Newfoundland and Labrador

Join econext and the Embassy of Iceland in Ottawa for a webinar on January 16 to explore cleantech innovation collaboration opportunities between Newfoundland and Labrador and Iceland.

Building on the visit to St. John’s, NL by Iceland’s President and First Lady in May of 2023, this free webinar will feature presentations from a series of Icelandic cleantech and renewable energy companies and highlight an existing partnership between Iceland’s national power company and Newfoundland’s own Growler Energy.

Featuring presentations from:

Landsvirkjun is the National Power Company of Iceland and operates 18 power stations in Iceland concentrated on five main areas of operation.

Carbon Recycling International is the globally-recognixed leader in CO2 to methanol technology, operating at industrial scale since 2012.

IceWind develops robust vertical axis wind turbines, designed to withstand all weather conditions and be installed in even the most remote locations.

Carbfix provides a natural and permanent storage solution by turning CO2 into stone underground in less than two years.

Laki Power creates line-powered monitoring systems for overhead power lines, offering innovative solutions to some of today’s most pressing challenges faced by power grid operators.

The Iceland Renewable Energy Cluster is the cluster organization for the whole energy industry in Iceland, a joint platform for both public and private entities and institutions of the whole value chain.

Defining Green Jobs for Newfoundland and Labrador: A Panel Discussion

Join NEIA’s Chair Ashley Noseworthy as she moderates a discussion on green jobs and makes a special announcement about “What’s Next” for NEIA!

What exactly is a ‘green job‘?

The energy transition and the greening of the economy will look different depending on where in the world you are. The makeup of an economy, including its current primary industries and future growth potential, will determine what the workforce transition demands and opportunities might be.

Join NEIA’s Chair Ashley Noseworthy as she leads a panel discussion which begins an exploration of what a green job means in the context of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Do we know what green jobs are? What will they be in our province? How do we strategically plan for changes in our workforce?
